Panic Disorder Therapy & Support in Singapore

Panic attacks can feel as though they arrive without warning. A sudden surge of intense fear or discomfort that escalates quickly and can leave you feeling shaken, confused, or unsure of what is happening. For many, the experience does not end when the episode passes, but continues as worry about when it might happen again.

At The Psychology Atelier, we provide panic attack counselling and therapy within a confidential setting. Our focus is on helping you understand what is happening in your mind and body, and to gradually regain a sense of control.

When Panic Attacks Feel Sudden and Overwhelming

These experiences are often accompanied by strong physical sensations such as a racing heart, tightness in the chest, and shortness of breath. This can make it difficult to tell whether it is a panic attack or something more serious.

Over time, this uncertainty may lead you to avoid certain situations or environments, especially those where an episode has happened before, which can begin to affect daily routines and confidence.

What is Panic Disorder?

Panic disorder is characterised by recurring panic attacks, combined with an ongoing concern about having further episodes. This persistent fear can significantly influence how a person approaches everyday situations, sometimes leading to avoidance of places or activities that feel uncertain or triggering.

In broader mental health contexts, panic disorder treatment may involve different forms of psychological support approaches tailored to the individual. At The Psychology Atelier, we focus on therapy and counselling support that helps you make sense of these patterns, rather than simply managing signs in isolation.

Common Signs of Panic Attacks

Panic attacks can present differently from person to person, but there are several commonly reported signs that can be both physical and psychological in nature:

Sudden and intense feelings of fear or dread

Heart palpitations or chest discomfort

Shortness of breath or hyperventilation

Nausea or abdominal discomfort

Feeling detached from reality or oneself

Fear of losing control

Chills, hot flashes, or sweating

Recognising these signs can be an important first step in understanding your experience and seeking appropriate support. While the experience can feel alarming, panic attacks themselves are not harmful. With support and guidance, it is possible to make sense of these experiences and reduce their impact on daily life.

Ways to Relieve Panic Attacks

During a panic attack, having practical strategies can help reduce the intensity of the experience. While these techniques may not stop an episode instantly, they can help you regain a sense of control.

Some commonly recommended ways to relieve panic attacks include:

Controlled Breathing

Slowing your breathing can help regulate the body’s stress response. Try inhaling slowly through your nose for a count of four, holding briefly, and exhaling gently through your mouth.

Grounding Techniques

Bringing your attention to the present moment can help interrupt escalating thoughts. For example, identifying five things you can see, four you can touch, and three you can hear.

Slowing Down Thoughts

Panic can amplify catastrophic thinking. Reminding yourself that the sensation will pass can help reduce its intensity over time.

Stepping Away from Triggers

If possible, moving to a quieter or more comfortable environment can help reduce overstimulation during an episode.

These strategies can be useful in the moment, but longer-term support often involves understanding the underlying patterns that contribute to panic responses.

How Therapy & Counselling Can Help

Therapy and counselling provide a supportive space to explore the experiences surrounding panic attacks. The process often involves developing an awareness of triggers, thought patterns, and emotional responses.

Through therapy, you may begin to:

Identify underlying triggers or stressors

Understand how thoughts and physical sensations interact

Develop coping tools for managing episodes

Manage the frequency or intensity of panic attacks

Rebuild confidence in navigating daily life

At The Psychology Atelier, our approach is personalised. We work collaboratively with you to explore what is most relevant to your experiences, supporting both immediate coping and longer-term resilience.

Support for panic attacks may include therapy, counselling, or other mental health treatment approaches, depending on individual needs.
